Start mission

Apollo 16 - tenth manned flight under the program Apollo took place on 16-27 April 1972. Fifth landing people on the moon. First landing in mountainous terrain, on the plateau near the crater Descartes. It was the second flight, after the Apollo 15 with an emphasis on research. At the disposal of astronauts had a "Lunar Rover number 2".

Start Apollo 16 from the spaceport at Cape Canaveral, held on 16 April 1972 in 17:54. Among the guests of honor at the launch site were: Vice President Spiro Agnew, King Hussein of Jordan and the Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. In the vicinity of Cape Canaveral for the launch, we watched about half a million people, a television audience of 38 million.

Lunar landing

During the flight, Apollo 16 lunar module "Orion" is the first time carried out a landing, not in the lunar sea. They landed in the highlands, on the plateau of Cayley, about 550 km south-east of the center of the lunar disk, north of the ancient crater Descartes, named after the French mathematician, philosopher, physicist and physiologist of the XVII century, Rene Descartes.

On the moon, astronauts spent a lot of experimentation, collecting lunar samples carried out and established scientific instruments to analyze the lunar surface. By the third exit to the surface, the sun rose to 45°C above the horizon, and the surface temperature increased to 85°C. Take-off showed a television camera "Lunar Rover".

End of mission

Apollo 16 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean; It happened at 19:45, at coordinates 0,70 ° S. w. 156,22 ° s. d. The duration of the mission amounted to 265 hours 51 minutes 5 seconds; Apollo 16 covered a distance of 2,238,598 km. After ditching the ship was in the inverted position (the sharp end in the water), but after 4 minutes 25 seconds with the help of the floats was brought to its normal position.

Apollo 16 splashed down 5.5 kilometers from the estimated point and 5 km from the search ship. The search and rescue operation was carried out in record time. The crew was taken aboard the U.S Navy aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga after 37 minutes after splashdown.

Summary of mission

The entire Apollo 11 mission lasted 8 days, 3 hours, 18 minutes, 35 seconds. Directly on the moon, the astronauts spent 2 hours, 31 minutes 40 seconds.

The total distance which astronauts John Young and Charles Duke had passed equals 27 km.

Time in space

As in all previous Apollo Missions, astronauts installed an American flag.

During his stay on the Moon, astronauts managed to collect 95.8 killogram moon rocks that were eventually sent to various labs and universities around the world.

Astronauts of Apollo 16 have conducted more than 20 experiments, results of these experiments were either radioed to Earth.
